What is a cognitive function?
A cognitive function is a precise mental mode. Jung distinguished two broad activities: perceiving (taking in information) and judging (deciding what to do with it). Each operates either outward (an extraverted orientation) or inward (an introverted orientation). Combining these axes gives eight functions, which the MBTI labels with two letters: the function and its orientation.
The eight cognitive functions
Four functions serve to perceive the world:
- Extraverted Sensing (Se): attention to the concrete present, to immediate sensations and to direct action.
- Introverted Sensing (Si): the memory of lived experience, comparison with the past, reliable detail.
- Extraverted Intuition (Ne): the exploration of possibilities, connections and new ideas turned outward.
- Introverted Intuition (Ni): inner synthesis, the intuition of a direction, the big picture.
Four others serve to judge and decide:
- Extraverted Thinking (Te): organisation, efficiency, objective criteria and measurable results.
- Introverted Thinking (Ti): internal consistency, personal logic, the fine analysis of a problem.
- Extraverted Feeling (Fe): attention to group harmony, to others' emotions and to shared values.
- Introverted Feeling (Fi): loyalty to one's inner values, authenticity and personal feeling.
The function stack
No type uses all eight functions equally. Each favours four of them, arranged in a precise order called the stack.
The dominant function is your most natural mental mode, the one you use without thinking. The auxiliary function is its right hand: it balances the dominant, often in the opposite orientation. The tertiary function stays more in the background and strengthens with age. The inferior function, finally, is your blind spot: clumsy, sometimes a source of stress, but also fertile ground for personal growth.
The inferior function: your tipping point under stress
The inferior function deserves special attention, because it's the one that surfaces when you're exhausted or under heavy pressure. Practitioners sometimes call this falling "in the grip": under intense stress, the type swings toward its weakest function, which it handles clumsily. An INTJ who is usually strategic may start over-investing in sensory detail (its inferior Extraverted Sensing), such as eating or tidying compulsively. An INFP loyal to their values may suddenly turn critical and cutting on purely logical points (its inferior Extraverted Thinking).
Recognising this mechanism is valuable: these reactions are not your "real" character, but a signal of overload. The way out usually runs through the dominant function, the one that restores you, and through rest.
A few example stacks
To make the theory concrete, here are the stacks of two types. For the INFJ: Introverted Intuition (Ni), then Extraverted Feeling (Fe), Introverted Thinking (Ti) and Extraverted Sensing (Se). For the ESTP, the order is almost reversed: Extraverted Sensing (Se), Introverted Thinking (Ti), Extraverted Feeling (Fe), Introverted Intuition (Ni). Two types can therefore use the same four functions in opposite orders, and that alone is enough to produce radically different personalities.
You don't need to memorise all sixteen stacks to benefit from this. What matters is grasping the logic: your dominant defines you, your inferior tests you, and the two middle functions balance the whole.
Why two close types are so different
This is where functions show their full value. Take the INTJ and the INTP: three shared letters (I, N, T), yet two very distinct ways of working. The INTJ leads with Introverted Intuition (Ni), backed by Extraverted Thinking (Te): it sets a direction and executes it methodically. The INTP leads with Introverted Thinking (Ti), backed by Extraverted Intuition (Ne): it analyses deeply and explores possibilities, without the same urge to act.
In other words, it isn't the shared letters that define a type, but the order and orientation of its functions. This layer of reading is what makes the MBTI far more than a four-letter label.
Do you need to master functions to know yourself?
